The Importance of Keeping a Writer’s Notebook

It struck me as odd that after being a writer for many years, journaling, publishing novels, short stories, and various articles, I’ve rediscovered a new tool in the writer’s arsenal that I wanted to share with you.

While it should be obvious that writer’s need to, well, write, in helping with that effort, a writer’s notebook may be just the tool for the job. It’s a great way to formulate a daily writing schedule. Plenty of famous author’s have kept writer’s notebooks from Anne Lamott to Mark Twain who had his custom made.

But first I must explain what a writer’s notebook is not. It is not a diary, or journal of daily events. A writer’s notebook is perhaps a more subtle and evocative discovery tool. A writer’s notebook is a record of impressions, observations, and ideas that may eventually serve as the basis for more formal writing. That’s pretty powerful stuff! A writer’s notebook is a way to excavate the hidden springs of the mind and imagination and does a good job of honing in on your unique perspective of the world.
