Vanessa hadn’t slept much last night. She’d not slept well in months. She laid in the bed with tired eyes that were weary from many sleepless nights. The anti-puff eye, aka hemorrhoid cream, was not masking the issue of the constant bags which now formed on her face. She wondered if this level of fatigue was from the pressure of work, her tumultuous relationship of late, or just plain ole exhaustion kicking in. She sat up, throwing the pearl and white comforter from her body as she got out of bed. She walked to the bathroom to wipe the sweat from her face with a cold washcloth. Great, another night of disturbing dreams and bags under my eyes. She was tired and didn’t know what she would do to get settled in for the evening. At this point, all she wanted was some peace and sound sleep. 

Winston, her boyfriend, didn’t spend the night as of late. They were giving the relationship the space they felt was needed to continue, grow- to do anything but stifle.

“Union Station greeted Rita with a panhandler.  As Rita opened the station doors, she was sucked back into an artificial world of transportation and shopping. Fine dining and billboard backdrops’ featuring top models was scattered everywhere. Hypnotic musical tunes pumped through the station like glockenspiels and pipe organs during a classical composition.

Towards the eatery area stood a row of beautiful green coppice that foliated into different corridors of eating delights. Rita looked forward to catching up with Lisa and mixing business with a little girl talk and some shopping. Rita made her way to the meeting place.

The ambiance and elegant designs struck Rita with delight as she stepped into the restaurant. Large crystal chandeliers swept the dining space. She was transfixed by the beauty and opulence. Dim candle lighting and fine white linen table cloths were arranged and meticulously draped around each table. Rita thought the historic landmark alone was worth the commute into Washington D.C.

“Welcome to B Smith’s,” a hostess announced.
